Asphalt Milling vs. Asphalt Overlay: What’s the Difference?

An asphalt overlay adds a new layer over prepared pavement. Milling removes part of the existing surface first, often to manage elevations and create a better transition before new asphalt is placed.

When milling is useful

Milling may be considered near curbs, doors, drains, or other places where adding asphalt would raise the surface too much. It can also remove worn material before an overlay. Milling does not replace base repair when the structure below has failed.

When an overlay fits

An overlay can renew a broadly worn but structurally sound lot after patches and drainage corrections are complete. The existing pavement must be evaluated first. Learn more about asphalt milling and resurfacing.
